Are Japanese bantams rare?

It took me nearly three years to get my flock of Japanese bantams together.

Japanese bantams are a rare breed of true bantam chicken from Japan with a history going back more than 300 years.

The Japanese bantam is not a good layer and as such is used almost exclusively as a show bird which means that not to many keepers have them.

Japanese bantams suffer from a lethal genetic condition which means that 25% of them never hatch making them more difficult to hatch out in great numbers.

Below: Quality Japanese bantams are very rare.

Japanese bantams are not hardy chickens and as such need a little more care than the average chicken. They are one of the least common backyard chickens.
